“Social and Political Dynamics in Israel. Jewish State 70 Years after the Declaration of Independence”
May 7-9, 2018, Krakow, Jagiellonian University
Israel was established 70 years ago as a refuge for every Jew, regardless of his or her background. Over the decades the Jewish State has absorbed new waves of immigrants, new ideas and new cultural trends. Diverse, often contradictory tendencies competed with each other shaping the identity of the Israelis. It is no different now as the society of the State of Israel is divided between the postmodernism and conservatism, secularism and religious tradition, the West and the Middle East, the diaspora and the sabras. The public space is full of discussions about the Jewish and democratic character of Israel, the role of its ethnic, national and religious communities, or its relations with Middle Eastern partners and the Western societies.
The conference organized by The Institute of Jewish Studies of the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, The Institute of Middle and Far East of the Jagiellonian University in Krakow in cooperation with The European Association of Israel Studies aims at facilitating the debate on the condition of the Israeli State, society and culture 70 years after establishment of the Jewish State. We would like to focus on the historical development of the State of Israel as well the context of diaspora for Israeli society. We are also interested in the extent to which the socio-cultural changes in Israel are part of broader trends in the Middle East and how they shape relations between the State of Israel and the region.
The conference is intended to become a platform where different disciplines and diverse research perspectives meet to enrich our understanding of Israel. We hope that this will allow us to more accurately capture the dynamics of the change in Israel and its position in the world.
We invite scholars interested in the following research areas:
- Israel and the Israelis in search of an identity: between the Middle East and the West
- historical development of the Modern State
- relations of the State of Israel with Jewish diaspora around the world
- ethnic and cultural diversity in Israel
- socio-cultural determinants of contemporary changes in Israel’s political system
- contemporary debate on the character of the Israeli democracy
